Bangladesh: ABBYY's Artificial Intelligence Software Reveals Its Advantage over OMR Hardware

Devnet Limited logoMoscow, Russia (March 2, 2009) – ABBYY, the leading provider of recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies, today announced that Devnet Limited, the ABBYY’s partner in Bangladesh, has successfully launched its project in Bangladesh College of Leather Technology (BCLT) on processing entrance examination forms.

Sample formThis is the first time that the institution’s selection committee in Bangladesh declines to use Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) hardware while processing the entrance exam answer sheets. This time it was agreed to process the documents by using ABBYY FormReader 6.5 Enterprise Edition. For this project, Devnet chose ABBYY software which, in addition to OMR  functionality,  is capable to perform Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) – recognition of handprinted characters filled in by hand. It had required only 7 hours to process all the 2300 exam forms with personal data filled in by the candidates, and only one operator. Such high performance was reached aslo thanks to the students who accurately filled the forms, according to special instructions. Devnet printed illustrated materials that explained students how to write characters in the answer sheets properly and posted them on the walls of auditoriums. Devnet also developed a special easy-to-use interface to help teachers calculate the percentage of correct answers and estimate the examination results immediately, after the forms are processed by ABBYY FormReader. This helps to maintain the confidentiality of data when processing the exam forms, as the correct answers are known only to the teachers and are not passed on to the processing centre.

«This project in Bangladesh College of Leather Technology is of high importance for us. It’s not only because the fact that we managed to save a lot of time and human resources while processing answer sheets with the help of ABBYY FormReader. What is more important is that we have proved the benefits of using ICR technology. People here should see that it really works! I foresee a great future for ICR in our country», said Shabbir Mahbub, Director & CTO, Devnet Limited.
