Taiwan’s Ministry of Finance Leverages ABBYY® FineReader® Engine to Process 25,000 Tax Forms Per Month

ABBYY’s First VAR in Taiwan Succeeds with IRS-like Entity

Formosoft has implemented several large-scale projects in Taiwanese organizations including banks, government offices, hospitals and corporations, providing services in e-finance, e-government, e-healthcare, and e-business. According to Aaron Su, Formosoft’s Director of Document Imaging, the company’s project with the National Tax Administration of Northern Taiwan, Ministry of Finance (similar to the United States ’ Internal Revenue Service), was one of the most extensive, yet successful to date. A multitude of data entry personnel were required to type in tax numbers on the printed forms that Taiwanese companies used to report their taxable earnings to the National Tax Administration. With 25,000 pages per month to process, Formosoft’s customer was barraged with data management and exorbitant costs in hiring human resources to manage the overload of paper.

Determining the Right OCR Solution

After searching and testing OCR engines, Mr. Su realized that ABBYY’s FineReader Engine was the best at recognizing the tax numbers. Formosoft purchased the OCR engine and developed a proprietary software product for its customer to convert the paper-based files into electronic documents. The result, according to Mr. Su has been extremely satisfying and cost-effective. “The software based on ABBYY’s Engine increased productivity for our customer, and stopped the need for our customer to hire any more typists to keep up with the workload from the Ministry of Finance,” said Mr. Su.
