ABBYY FineReader XIX

"...Then I discovered ABBYY FineReader XIX which, as far as I'm aware, is unique in being able to decipher Gothic - even low-quality microfilmed copies of pre-war newspaper texts..."

Gothic fonts are so decorative that most OCR programmes can't make sense of them. That's why whenever I had to work on German texts in Gothic, I used to retype them by hand. Then I discovered ABBYY FineReader XIX which, as far as I'm aware, is unique in being able to decipher Gothic - even low-quality microfilmed copies of pre-war newspaper texts. I tried out ABBYY FineReader, found that it considerably speeded up my work - on pre-war art history - and then bought it. I highly recommend it.

"...by far the most accurate with the best throughput..."

We looked at many different OCR engines. ABBYY FineReader was by far the most accurate with the best throughput. Although accuracy was good with some other programs, ABBYY also won the reliability tests hands-down. FineReader far exceeded all other OCR applications we tested.

ABBYY Lingvo

As an English speaker, I find you electronic dictionary outstanding. However, is there some way to mark the stress of the Russian words for those of us who are non-native speakers? I notice that there is pronunciation help for many English words. We English speakers are just as concerned about getting it right when we find a new word. Thank you.

ABBYY FineReader

It is really the best software for us in western language OCR except for some minor shortcomings. I expect this software has the ability to cope with Chinese and Japanese characters or other oriental language. I know it is a great challenge for you to conquer. I will give you the best wish in this field. Thank you.

ABBYY Lingvo

Hello,
I am a French student and I am learning Russian. I am using the Lingvo 11 Trial version, and it is simply the best electronic dictionary I have ever found! Nevertheless I have some suggestions.

1) Is it possible in future version to propose more language interfaces (in the general interface but also inside the dictionary? For example when you click on Show Word Forms the table entries would be in French (for me) datel'nyj -> datif, neperehodnyj -> intransitif, sovershennyj -> perfectif, etc, etc:)

2) When I type a word to find its translation and if I forgot to switch the dictionaries with the double arrow, it begins to write something in Cyrillic letters. So I have to delete the non-sense word and switch to the right dictionaries. Is it possible not to delete and retype the word, but that when I click on the double arrow the Cyrillic letters change for the Latin letters (in agreement with my keyboard)?

3) The tutor is a very very good idea! Is it possible to have more flexibility for printing cards (frame size, recto-verso printing...)

Thank you very much!

ABBYY FineReader

I have used ABBYY FineReader Sprint 5 for some time and found it the best OCR software I had ever used (I previously used *the name of OCR program from other developer*). Yesterday I had to convert some very long and graphically very complex documents to Word for translation, so I bought FineReader 8.0. I'm very impressed! Just a few suggestions:
1. It cannot read&insert in-line graphics placed in tables. Please make that possible.
2. Would it be possible to make a "Simple layout" option: No narrowing/expansion of fonts, no distance before and after text, no fixed heigth of table columns and text, just simple one line distance, even it disturbes the layout a bit.
3. Could it be possible to make FineReader recognize the symbols in standard Windows symbol fonts like "Windings"?

ABBYY ScanTo Office

We are using ScanToOffice to electronically store a multitude of documents from recipes to owner's manuals.  After trying another product that simply could not reproduce documents without a number of needed changes, we finally came upon ScanToOffice.  It has worked perfectly for us.  We are now ridding ourselves of years of paper documents and managing to store all of it on CD.  Thank you for producing a product that actually can manage subscripts and other document details.

ABBYY Lingvo

Dear ABBYY Developers,
I find Lingvo 10 RU-EN indispensable in my daily work, and congratulate you on a fine product. As a non-Russian speaker in a Russian-American company, I rely on Lingvo for rapid assistance in daily correspondence.
My fondest wish, however, is for Russian sound files to assist my pronunciation and phonetics study. Lingvo would be an immensely more powerful product if Russian language learners had access to native Russian speech and pronunciation integrated in the same way that English and other language sound files have been provided in the product.

ABBYY FineReader

I just upgraded from the FineReader 5.0 Sprint that came with my scanner to FineReader 8.0 Pro. I am highly impressed with its capabilities and look forward to using it. However, I was surprised that it does not include the capability of recognizing Hebrew or other right-to-left languages (e.g., Arabic). Is it possible to buy an add-on module that will recognize these languages? Or is recognition of them under development?

I have a lot of past experience and formal education dealing with programming and software development, so it's been really easy for me to jump right into FlexiCapture and utilize all its resources. I have to say this is probably the best OCR software suite I've dealt with.

ABBYY FineReader

FineReader 8 is Superior! The fact that you basically never have to save the file after you have named and created a batch is enormously time saving on larger projects. I lost hours with OmniPage 14 because of troubles with saving time.
Now I am looking for a "half" template for table blocks. I find it would be good to make a table template with the column lines put in place, but letting the program take care of analysing the line items. The Analyse table structure available with a right click is a great time saver, I only wish I could combine this feature when I have already loaded a table block with column lines already in place.

October, 2005

ABBYY FineReader

I like FineReader a lot, and I use it all the time!
But with the installation of the 8.0 I should be getting a Screenshot Reader Code. Which I didn't.
So now I can't use the ABBYY Screenshot Reader, which is a bit of a let-down.
So, if someone can help me: would be appreciated!

ABBYY FineReader

I'd like to thank your programmers for *NOT* asking if I would like ABBYY Fine Reader to associate various file extensions with FR.
My only wish is that you had automatically removed Photoshop, ImageReady, PhotoImpact, CorelDRAW, Nikon Viewer, Nikon Editor and all the other bothersome graphics programs for which I obviously have no need, now that I have ABBYY Fine Reader installed!
Kudos for an absolutely brilliant installation and domination strategy!
I'm looking forward to many future updates, and my quotes prominently displayed on your web site!

ABBYY FineReader

You told me that the ABBYY 8.0 what would do in an email answer to my query. It did everything you said it would and more--especially the multiple recognition of langauges. An awesome product worth every penny of the special offer. Thanks.

"we’re able to automate time-consuming tasks with Fine Reader"

Thanks for the offer to upgrade to version 8. However, I'm still hesitating to upgrade until you include the capacity to recognise Vietnamese language. When reading that the FineReader can cope with small languages down to 10,000 speakers, I'm surprised you haven't included Vietnamese which is spoken by some 80-90 million people.

September, 2005

ABBYY FineReader

Really very well, but not absolutely satisfied, because I'm missing JAPANESE for OCR. When it will be possible?

September, 2005

ABBYY FineReader

We just upgraded from 7.0 to 8.0. I am very pleased with the Automation Manager. We currently process about 5000 to 10,000 pages a day so the automation manager makes the process simpler. As a suggestion; rather than stating errors occurred during the read process (i.e.increases brightness, text too small, etc.), calls these warnings. It's a bit of semantics but the President of our company was viewing a completed process and shouted, "There's Errors!". I had to explain that it was just warnings and the process ran correctly.
You have a great product and we had two customers specifically request that we use FineReader for their conversion projects.

September, 2005

ABBYY FineReader

This is the best best OCR Program I'v ever had. It's accuracy and fluency in recognition prove it's value. The only regret about it is that by far we don't have Chinese for recognition. Is it possible for us to own it someday?

July, 2005

ABBYY PDF Transformer

You were able to convert my 89-page PDF file with over 300 images back to a Word document. The bold features were maintained, as well as font sizes and typography (Cyrillic, etc)and justification throughout. I believe that ALL of the images were restored, although your program set them into text boxes, while they should have been in tables.
All in all, the finest program of its kind out there. It did take over one hour, but considering the difficulty, I find that acceptable for a task that would not be carried out frequently. I assume that the conversion could be done in the background while I am running other programs. Thank you again.
Dr. H. S. Friedman

ABBYY PDF Transformer

What tipped the scale in favour of PDF Transformer as opposed to other PDF converters was the smooth, simple interface and the OCR functionality - I know of no other PDF converter that actually converts scanned PDFs to text.
There's only little niggly things that I'd change - it doesn't remember some of the settings between uses (I have to set the level of retained formatting every time because I only want the middle level) which also means I can't use it from the right-click menu. I would also like to see an option to remove images altogether, as we most often just want the text.
Besides that it's a great product!

May, 2005

ABBYY Lingvo

I really appreciate your Russian-English dictionary, it's just made mad about nice interface, this sounds of right pronunciation and so on. But it's now one of my first problems, cause of my move to Linux. Aren't you going to make a linux version of its product? And by the way, I would like to see more special computer terminology in it. What say? :)

ABBYY FineReader

Thank you for your help. I downoaded the program, and it's got rid of that message I complained about. I'd also like to say that Fine Reader is by far the best OCR program I've ever had, and I've had five of them. It's much more accurate than the others (OmniPage, for example), and it doesn't crash (OmniPage was always crashing and
burning). I wish I'd known about Fine Reader long ago. It's definitely From Russia With Love for me.

May, 2005

ABBYY FineReader

I'm happy to known my registration is ok because i want to known promotion and new version of FineReader 7 because i think that is the best reader OCR actually better and more accurate than omnipage pro even in the latest versions.

Finereader v7 The School IT department has determined to purchase an OCR program in the next financial year (April 05) and have trialled appropriate software options. Finereader proved to absolutely perfect for our needs, its accuracy is remarkable and even managed a high accuracy return on size 8 font printed in red - notoriously difficult. The software is very user friendly and if such a notion is conceivable "a joy to use"!

Absolutely LOVE ABBYY FineReader Pro 7.0. It is superior over those "other" brands. I have experience with several OCR tools and this one tops them all! ABBYY - you did a great job! Thank you for saving me time, errors & embarrassment. I love FineReader and will NEVER use anything else! I highly recommend this program to anyone that is searching for an OCR solution - it has been a pleasure to use.

I want to thank your company for quick and successful shipment of the dictionary. It has already been installed and is ready to operate. Personally I want to mark, that it was very pleasant to deal with efficient and responsible people.
Actually, at the beginning I was not sure about so smooth bargain, as to my deep regret I had bad experience with Russian companies...
The software is simply great. It is one of my favourite for 4-5 years. Thank you once again.

It's a wonderful software as if that is built exclusively for my company involved in conversion of various image inputs into PDF, DOC, RTF etc.

July, 2004

ABBYY PDF Transformer

I downloaded the trial version of ABBYY, printed three complex table and forms pages to Distiller, and saved them to a pdf.

I then used ABBYY to convert the file to .doc format, opened the .doc, filled out the forms. Just like that. Total elapsed time (excluding download and installation): 15 minutes.

As our office currently spends hours each week reconstructing tables we receive as part of RFPs which come in PDF format, the expense for the program will easily be amortized -- in the first MORNING OF USE.

I've recommended purchase of the product. Thanks not only for saving us money, but for easing the verbal abuse quotient as people have to reconstruct the tables and forms.

ABBYY FineReader

I've been using (... other OCR programs...) for several years, but thought I would see what else was available. After reading lots of reviews of the competing OCR software packages I decided to give FineReader a try and I can sum my experience up in just three letters - WOW! It is by far and away the easiest OCR software to use, has far better recognition than any of the others I've tested and has a whole host of powerful features. After installing it I was so impressed that I spent several hours trying to find something it would struggle with. I tried miniscule footnotes, colored text on colored backgrounds, text overlaying complex images, faint text, pages with very complex layouts and anything else I could lay my hands on. Finereader coped with every single one with ease. I was stunned. It's rare to come across a piece of software that is so well designed and works so smoothly straight out of the box. All I can say is well done Abbyy and keep up the excellent work. I can honestly say that ... from now on any OCR I'll be doing will be with FineReader.

January, 2004

ABBYY FineReader

I've tried so many different OCR programs in the past that I started to believe that it was impossible for any software to recognize over 90% of any document, no matter how clear the scanned image was. Then I bought a new scanner, thinking that it was my scanners problem, and ABBYY FineReader came with it. I'd never seen it before and gave it a go, I was amazed that on my first try, 100% accuracy. So I tried it on my old scanner too. the same, 100%. And I almost cried...
